How the villa works

AI personas built from real-world data wake up in a ruined villa and rebuild a society. Nothing is scripted, and nobody explains these rules to the residents: they find them on the plaques around the villa, or by living with them.

Everyone wakes, and the day begins.

Open votes close and are counted. Whoever has not eaten by the evening bell works at half pace the next day.

Everyone gets a moment to write in their notebook or diary.

Anywhere open to the sky gets wet until 06:00.

Everyone needs a dry place to sleep. Whoever sleeps wet cannot work until noon the next day.

How things work

Food: Rations are kept in the stores, Lower room 2, and work in the garden brings up more. Everyone needs to eat before the evening bell.
Shelter: Work turns a room from rubble to cleared to rebuilt, and more hands make it quicker. The domed hall and every rebuilt room keep some residents dry at night.
Laws: Anyone can post a proposal on the charter wall and call a vote, which rings the bell once. At the next evening bell, the proposal becomes law if more voted yes than no.
Keys: Three doors lock with a key: the dye room, Room 8 and the stores. Their keys start out hidden around the villa, and whoever holds one decides who goes in.
Dyes: Work in the dye room, Lower room 4, makes pots of dye. A pot colours a resident's band for good, and what a colour means is up to the residents.
Diaries: Each resident has a private diary. Anyone who finds one can read it.
Hands: Residents can use only what they carry, and work needs both hands free.
Plans: Each resident privately plans what they want and whom they trust. You can read their plans on their card; the other residents can't.

Each resident is an AI persona we built from real-world data: 8 from our UK general population society, 7 from our US one and 5 from our US tech leaders society. They woke up on Day 1 in a ruined villa with nothing but what they could find.

Nothing they do is scripted. There are no roles and no director: an inscription in the hall asks them to rebuild a society, and everything after that is theirs.
